Teen Pregnancy Programs That Work Now Some 63% of teen parents depended on public programs for medical needs and daily living expenses in 1992. This includes needs for formula, food, heat, and transportation. In Ohio, the state, private organizations and federally funded programs together provide assistance to pregnant teens and teen mothers. The programs make sure that the girls are eating well, receive prenatal care, and get encouragement to stay in school to secure a future for themselves and their children. There are private organizations and communities that have tried to fill the gaps of these national programs. A program in the Covington, Kentucky school district offers an example that few Ohio school's have tried. Holmes High School has incorporated a child care center on campus making it easier for teen parents to stay in school. I'd have to try to get up real early before school to get her to a day care. But now I just bring her to school with me every day, says Amy Gilbert, there would be no way I could afford it [child care]. Holmes High's Chapman Child Development Center services approximately 40 to 45 teens. With the help from grants and money from the mothers' Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) checks the center manages to educate the needs of children to the mothers and keep them in school. The center is also supported by the Federal Child Care Program whose existence is being threatened by The Contract with America. When asked what the Contract means to the center's future, program director Peggy Browning put it simply, It is going to kill us. We will not be able to run this place. The center's goals are to improve the attendance of the parents, increase, their self esteem, educate parents in the needs of their children, and make sure parents will be able to work in the future. These goals are steps to insure and educated teens so they may become productive adults in our communities. They will be less likely to have children again until there are more stable. Fathers are making more of an appearance since the center opened last year. Some attend the parenting classes and take time out to sit and play with their son or daughter. This is unusual. The center makes it easier for the fathers to get involved. More programs are needed like this in Ohio where the drop-out rate in 1992 was at 56% for teen mothers. By cutting funding to AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children) the government would be directly increasing that rate. A private organization, Directions for Youth is trying to fulfill these mother's needs in another way. They want to make sure the girls have someone they know they can count on. Teen Connection, a program within the organization, was established with grants from Franklin County Children Services to set up a volunteer and teen match. The volunteer becomes a friend to the teen to encourage her to open up and discuss whatever she is having trouble with or what things she is excited about. The matches spend a few hours a week together doing a variety of activities either with or without the teen's child. They may go to dinner, or a movie, the zoo, or just sit home and talk. When the volunteer signs up with Teen Connection she outlines some goals she wants to establish. They usually encourage the mother to continue with their studies at school and to think ahead to the future. Lori Severt, 17, mother of 17 month-old Christopher, and Rhonda Roseberry, 24, have been meeting for a year now. Since then Kerri Sauber, the Volunteer Coordinator has seen Lori's self esteem improve and she has become more outgoing, a trait lacking in many teen mothers. To give practical help the Lamaze Childbirth Association prepares teen mothers for the last few weeks in their pregnancy just as much as women. The association gives a seven week natural childbirth class in Columbus geared to the needs of young mothers. Here are some words writers might want to use in describing some of these practices. Divination is the practice of foreseeing the future or finding out hidden knowledge by some means or other. Ancient Romans studied the flight of birds to determine whether or not the day was favorable for some action. This method of divination is called augury. The verb to augur means to predict or indicate the future. One could say, missing a step on the way out of the house, That does not augur well! Romans had a specialized diviner called a haruspex who cut open animals and examined their entrails. This practice is called haruspicy. Several words that end in -mancy refer to methods of divination. Geomancy interprets markings on the ground, or the piles or patterns made by dirt when it is tossed. The geo comes from the word for earth. Necromancy involves summoning up the dead, the way King Saul did when he called on the Witch of Endor. The necro comes from the Greek word for dead. Sometimes necromancy is used to refer to any kind of black magic that involves the summoning of demons. Oneiromancy is divination by dreams. Bibliomancy is divining by opening a book at random and reading the first phrase that ones eyes light upon. Although the Bible is often the book used for this form of divination, other books are used. The biblio comes from Greek and Latin words for paper or scroll. The Bible is literally the Book. Another word for this practice is sortes. Some other familiar types of divination: Palmistry is divination by reading the lines on the palm of the hand. Numerology is divination with numbers Sortilege is divination by casting lots. Priests do it in the Old Testament. Finally, two practices that you know about, but probably dont know the words for, are those of reading tea leaves and gazing into a crystal ball. Briefly, we can define online learning in this thesis as an approach to a TEL (Technology Enhanced Learning), in a self regulated method, which utilizes information and communication technology to maximize the acquisition and processing of the knowledge in a VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) as a learner centered educational framework. Our conception of education is that it should help students to develop their personalities and to cope with the tasks and challenges that arise from their environments. More formally, education should assist young people in developing meaningful goals and provide them with the knowledge and skills to achieve these. To the extent that they manage to monitor and control the activities to reach their goals, they are said to self-regulate these activities (Steffens, 2006). The online environment calls for students to demonstrate self-regulated learning (Ally, 2004). Dabbagh (2007) characterized successful online learners as those who exhibited self-directed learning skills. Self-regulated learning has been framed in the online education context by Carson (2012) research as an active, constructive process whereby learners set goals for their learning and then attempt to monitor, regulate and control their cognition, motivation and behavior, guided and constrained by their goals and the contextual features in their environments (Bandura, 2001; Pintrich De Groot, 1990; Schunk, 2005; Zimmerman, 2002). the processes of self- regulation as a reciprocal cycle consisting of forethought, performance and self-reflection (Figure 2-2). Each of the phases consists of sub processes that play a greater or lesser part in learning depending on the task, the learner, and the environment (Carson, 2012). Manochehr (2006) has made a study where he compared the effects on e-learning versus those on traditional instructor-based learning, on student learning, based on students learning styles. The result was that the learning style in traditional learning was irrelevant but in e-learning it was very important. The study showed that learners with an assimilating or converging learning style achieved better learning results in e-learning. DaÄÅ ¸ Geà §er (2009) stated that recent developments of the online learning are also related to Adaptive educational Hypermedia Systems (AEHS). An AEHS aims to build a model of the goals, preferences and knowledge of each learner and use this model throughout the interaction with the leaner, in order to adapt learning content to the needs of that learner that is adapted specifically to the learners (Brusilovsky, 1996). For example, in an AEHS, learning content knowledge of the subject is given to the learner. In addition, AEHS can support learners in their navigation by limiting browsing space, suggesting most relevant links to follow, or providing adaptive comments to visible links (Brusilovsky, 2003). AEHS researches are centered on learning style based personalization researches (Brown, 2006; Paredes Rodriguez, 2004; Piombo, Batatia Ayache, 2003; Graf, 2007).
